At VMware’s recent internal R&D Innovation offsite, I had the pleasure of sharing this video with the attendees. It is a terrific selection of stories about products and features that got their start at this annual event. RADIO: A Different Kind of High Performance

Those who read my blog posts know I focus on High Performance Computing here at VMware and that I spend a lot of time thinking about things like latency and the performance of compute-intensive technical applications on vSphere. Today I want to talk about a different kind of High Performance. I just got back from VMware’s internal R&D Innovation Offsite (RADIO) which was held this year in Monterey, California. It was a three-day gathering of about 1300 people from across VMware’s R&D organization and from around the world. This was my second RADIO event as a VMware employee and I was once again blown away by both the sheer volume and the quality of the technical content at the conference. Innovation, entrepreneurship and education … a Silicon Valley discussion.

It was a very interesting day at VMware today! We hosted an engaging panel discussion on innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation, organized by the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness . The conversation spanned a variety of topics, from Silicon Valley ‘secret sauce’ for entrepreneurship to the future of education and technology as a transformative force in the global community. It was invigorating to hear from such a variety of accomplished technology leaders … it’s not often we get to sit down for an hour and discuss the future with these folks. Participants were Steve Case, founder of AOL, Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, John Doerr, icon in venture capital, and Aneesh Chopra, CTO of...

ThinApp – Designed for continuous innovation

In ThinApp’s upcoming 4.5 release (currently in beta), we’ve managed to accelerate the startup time for some virtualized applications like Office up to 200% compared with previous versions!  One big secret to the optimization comes from internal file format changes that occur when building packages.  ThinApp performs static analysis on the applications and rearranges executables and DLLs bits on disk so they can be mapped into memory with minimal disk and cpu overhead.  Because this optimization relies on drastic file format changes, it could be nightmare of backward and forward compatibility issues when rolling out to customers and technology partners.  But, thanks to some clever design, it’s just another regular release with no process changes for our customers and partners.   File format backward...
